20th Annual Rug Hooking Event Coming Soon To Sauder Village

rughooking2Archbold, OH – Recognized as one of the top rug hooking events in the nation, the 20th Annual Sauder Village Rug Hooking Event is expected to once again be a spectacular celebration of this traditional craft. This annual Rug Hooking Week is expected to draw thousands of rug hookers from across the country to Sauder Village for an event featuring an amazing display of hooked rugs, workshops, lectures, vendors and many special exhibits.

For four days starting Wednesday, August 17 through Saturday, August 20, hundreds of rug hookers will be contributing their pieces for this museum-quality exhibit in Founder’s Hall. Again this year the exhibit will offer a new and exciting display of colors, patterns, sizes and designs featuring hundreds of rugs in a number of categories including original designs, people and places, animals, geometric designs, florals, and mixed media. The exhibit is an amazing celebration of the creativity and hard work each rug represents.

Each year the Featured Exhibits pay tribute to the work of outstanding rug hookers – offering the unique opportunity to closely study techniques, colors, designs, and the in-depth story of each of these talented artists. This year the feature exhibits will showcase rugs from the collection of James and Mercedes Hutchinson as well as Pearl K. McGown. The “McDonald Sisters Exhibit” will share the story and creative works of Bertha and Otha McDonald from the heart of West Virginia. These sisters used clothing, upholstery material and traditional sewing skills along with ingenuity to create rugs and footstools. The “Paisley Exhibit” features a collection of more than 30 vintage and antique paisley shawls or covers from the Victorian era to present day. Finally, an exhibit of “Story Rugs” will share how contemporary and historic artists have been telling stories in their hooked rugs for years. Rather than using words on paper, the artists uses loops to create characters, events, places and memories for their story rugs! Guests will also enjoy looking at the themed Group Exhibits as well as the 2016 Main Exhibit Challenge “Be a Good Sport.”

The “Celebration Exhibit” featuring the award-winning rugs from Rug Hooking Magazine’s “Celebration of Hand-Hooked Rugs XXVI” will be a highlight of the Sauder Village event again this year. All of the Celebration award-winners have been invited to display their rugs in this special “Celebration Exhibit” in Founder’s Hall. This breathtaking display will feature some of the best rugs in the country as well as internationally.

Every year the Sauder Village Rug Hooking event draws thousands of savvy rug hookers from across the country to see the exhibit and participate in a variety of workshops offered by accomplished teachers from across the country. The show also provides guests the opportunity to purchase supplies, kits, and tools directly from respected vendors specializing in rug hooking materials. Each day of the exhibit there will be working demonstrators to watch and avid rug hookers available to share first-hand information about this traditional craft. There are a variety of rug hooking classes offered throughout the week including a gallery walk and many other hands-on workshops.
