Algal Bloom Spotted On Maumee & Auglaize Rivers

The Defiance County General Health District has released notice that an algal bloom has been discovered on the Maumee and parts of the Auglaize River. Both waterways have a green film present on the top of some areas.

The release notes that it has not yet been confirmed what the source of the algae is nor if the bloom is one that produces toxins and cause health issues.

The release cautions to avoid water that looks like spilled paint; has surface scums, mats, or films; is discolored or has water or streaks; or has green globs floating below the surface.

Test results regarding what type of algae is present should be completed soon and the release also assures that the Defiance drinking water supply is safe.
