(April 11th, 2015) – FAYETTE: Community members gathered at Fayette High School on Saturday to commemorate the FFA members talents and achievements for the year. The evening began with a fine banquet meal during which a production of “Fayette FFA Year In Review” played to both entertain and inform attendants.
The opening ceremonies proceeded as the Secretary introduced guests in attendance. First in recognition were FFA members who displayed an outstanding ability to combine membership and high scholarship qualities. 19 members proficiently obtained a GPA of 3.5–3.99 and 18 obtained a 3.0–3.49 GPA. This year the FFA Alumni awarded two Full FFA Scholarships and 6-1/2 scholarships.
In order to keep track of the wide variety of activities members participate in, the chapter conducts a participation system that includes a plateau in which members attempt to reach. First year members that completed all necessary requirements were awarded the Greenhand Degree award; second, third, and fourth year members received the Chapter Degree award.
In October, the FFA conducted sales orders for fresh Florida citrus that were delivered in December. Members sold over $14,000 worth of fruits, nuts, and beef jerky to fundraise chapter operations. The top three sellers for 2014 were recognized: Leah Bussing in 3rd selling $628, Taylor West in 2nd with $640, and Joel Smith with a staggering $2,216 worth of goods sold in 1st place. Joel will receive a trophy and gift certificate for his great efforts.
Next the chapter bestowed the Honorary Chapter degree to honorary FFA members Bill Bussing and Brian & Jolene Myers. Bussing is instrumental in planting and harvesting the school’s test plot, using his own equipment and time to ensure the test plot has been planted and harvested. Brian and Jolene Myers have continually supported the FFA alumni: whether helping balance finances, operating the Beef stand, or chaperoning members to the FFA State Convention, their efforts help the chapter continue to be a success.
Each year members participate in FFA career development competitions to practice skills learned in class. Members of the Parliamentary Procedure took 1st place on the county level and 3rd in districts. The Rural soils judging team placed 4th at the county contests and 3rd at districts while the Urban soils team placed 4th at county and 7th at districts. Fayette’s Dairy Foods team placed 6th in the district contest as the Poultry judging contestants placed 12th in the district. Among many other competitions, Fayette’s FFA showed remarkable leadership and exceptional competence.
Local businesses were also recognized on behalf of the FFA: Martinline Farms has continued to be instrumental in training and preparing students to compete in the district dairy cattle contest, preparing classes, instructing students, and supporting alumni. Before adjourning this year’s banquet, the 2015 senior members individually recognized and thanked their parents for their continued support and awarding them an appreciation plaque. Finally, the 2015 officer team was duly installed to their elected positions, respectively.
