FORT WAYNE, Ind. – The TinCaps walked off for a second consecutive day to win, 3-2, against the Beloit Snappers (Oakland Athletics) on Thursday night at Parkview Field. With the victory, the ’Caps completed a three-game series sweep.
Fort Wayne (13-14) led the whole way until the bottom of the ninth when Beloit (9-12) tied the game with an RBI single from Jake Lumley to send the game into extras. In the bottom of the 10th inning, the TinCaps responded with a walk-off fielder’s choice grounder from left fielder Tre Carter to score catcher Jalen Washington for the game’s winning run.
After Carter hit a hard grounder to Beloit first baseman Hunter Hargrove and threw home, Washington slid to the left side of the plate to avoid a tag coming from Jordan Devencenzi.
The extra-inning game was the first of the season for the TinCaps with the new rule changes in place for Minor League Baseball this year. The rule changes put Washington on second base to start the bottom of the 10th inning after reliever Evan Miller blanked Beloit in the top half of the inning.
The TinCaps were aided by a tremendous start from Osvaldo Hernandez, who went a season-long six innings, allowing only one unearned run and tying a season-high with six strikeouts.
The TinCaps helped Hernandez out offensively in the first inning. A double from third baseman Esteury Ruiz and a walk from first baseman Carlos Belen put runners on first and second for the hot-hitting shortstop Justin Lopez.
Lopez lifted a ball to left-center field to score Ruiz and Belen for a two-run triple to give the TinCaps a 2-0 lead. Lopez went on to double in the fourth inning as well to give him four extra-base hits and five RBIs in the last two days.
Fort Wayne continued to lead 2-0 until the top of the third inning when Austin Beck scored on a wild-pitch third strike that would have ended the inning, but instead, Beloit pulled within one run.
After the ninth inning score from the Snappers the game was tied, 2-2, with Beloit threatening again in the top of the 10th. Mickey McDonald started the inning at second base and made it to third with only one out in the inning before Hargrove grounded into an inning-ending double play to set up for the walk-off win in the bottom half.
