DAVENPORT, Iowa – The TinCaps scored three runs in both the fifth and ninth innings to rally from behind to win, 6-3, over the Quad Cities River Bandits (Houston Astros) on Monday evening at Modern Woodman Park.
Quad Cities (16-13) took the lead in the bottom of the third inning. Cody Bohanek led off the inning with a single to center field before Jacob Meyers stepped to the plate to crank a 1-0 pitch over the left-center-field wall to give the River Bandits a 2-0 advantage. The Bandits then loaded the bases with no outs but Mason Thompson got out of the bind without further damage. Thompson sat down nine in a row as he finished five innings with five strikeouts.
Fort Wayne (14-17) responded at the plate in the fifth. The TinCaps loaded the bases with two singles and a walk for center fielder Jeisson Rosario, who sent a fly ball deep enough to center field to score third baseman Justin Lopez on a sacrifice fly and put Fort Wayne on the board, 2-1.
The next batter, shortstop Gabriel Arias lined a two-run single to center field, scoring catcher Juan Fernandez from third and left fielder Jack Suwinski from second to give the TinCaps their first lead at 3-2.
The TinCaps added insurance in the top of the ninth inning, with all of the damage coming with two outs. Rosario collected an RBI single on a ground ball to left field to score designated hitter Luis Campusano and extend to a TinCaps 4-2 edge.
Arias continued the clutch hitting with his third and fourth RBIs of the night on another ground ball to left fielder J.J. Matijevic to score Suwinski and second baseman Reinaldo Ilarraza to give the TinCaps a sizable 6-2 advantage.
The River Bandits got one run back in the bottom of the ninth inning on a sacrifice fly from designated hitter Colton Shaver, but the lead for Fort Wayne proved to be enough to collect the series opening victory. With the win, the TinCaps also snapped a three-game losing skid.
Fort Wayne received four different multi-hit performances from Rosario, Arias, Lopez, and Suwinski who each finished with two hits to lead the TinCaps offensively.
After Thompson, Travis Radke pitched two perfect innings and Jared Carkuff worked a perfect eighth, so Fort Wayne pitchers at one point retired 18 batters in a row.
