John W. Smith (1932 – 2015)

InMemoryJohn W. Smith Jr, age 83, of Wauseon, passed away Thursday morning May 14, 2015 at the University of Toledo Medical Center. He was born in Lyons, OH on January 5, 1932 to the late John W. Smith and Abbie (Austin) Smith. John was a graduate of Lyons High School. He was a Veteran having served with the U.S Army during the Korean War. On February 10, 1953 he married Audrey Frey and she survives.

John was a truck driver for McCord Gasket for over 30 years until its closing. He enjoyed light construction during his spare time and was known as a handyman. Some of his fondest hobbies included small engine repair, gun collecting, hunting, fishing, caring for his lawn and being an old car enthusiast; especially his own Mustang, which he showed. John was a member of the Wauseon American Legion, First Christian Church (Disciples of Christ) in Wauseon and the “Card Club”.

He is survived by his wife of 62 years, Audrey; daughters, Denise (Robert) McCoy, Diana (Tim) Fridley and Linda A. Smith; sister, Dorothy Hall; grandchildren, Sasha (Mat) Jarosz, Jared (Cherise) Smith and Judd (Brandy Woodring) Smith; great grandchildren, Shelby, Lindsay and Kabellah. John was preceded in death by his parents; infant daughter, Linda K. Smith; one sister and six brothers.

Friends will be received from 2-4 and 6-8 PM on Sunday, May 18, 2015 at Barnes Funeral Chapel, 5825 St. Hwy. 109 in Delta. A funeral service celebrating John’s life will be held at 10:00 AM on Monday at First Christian Church, 129 E. Elm St., Wauseon, Ohio 43567. Pastor Mitch Maxted will be officiating. Interment will follow at Winameg Cemetery near Delta. Military honors will be provided by the Fulton County Honor Guard.
