THE VILLAGE REPORTER

During their June 11 meeting, members of the West Unity Village Council unanimously approved the third reading of Ordinance 2015-04, which will raise the necessary deposit for water services by the village from $75 to $125. The ordinance was created to help offset losses the village has seen in the past from residents leaving without paying their final bill. The deposit to the village will be refunded to a resident upon termination of water service provided that their account is paid in full. The deposit will cover the unpaid portion of any account past due should a resident terminate water service.

Also passed during the meeting was Resolution 06-2015-06 to put a one mill levy on the November ballot for park maintenance.

During his report, Village Administrator Rice Beals informed council that:

•Preliminary work with Poggemeyer has begun on the OPWC grant for the East Jackson Street water main. Beals is also working with Poggemeyer on compliance issues at the sewer plant. It is possible that the ultra-violet disinfection system is not working properly. The system was built in 1997, making it older than most. It was also noted that it may be undersized for the addition of the turnpike, which is when many issues began. However, it was also noted that there are many other factors, including a different test now being used, that may be creating the issues.

•The 2014 Consumer Confidence Report (CCR) is ready for distribution and will be mailed soon.

•The income study is ongoing and is being done in waves. Those whom have not yet received a survy should expect to see one soon.

•The acquisition of neighboring Rails to Trails land by the Village has been postponed until funds can be procured for a current survey.

Mayor Peggy Bernath thanked Village employees, the West Unity Police Department, the Chamber of Commerce, and the Unity Tractor Club for their efforts during the recent Gathering festivities. Police Chief JR Jones also expressed his gratitude to Jim Eisel and the Fire Department for their assistance during the festivities.

Council entered into executive session for the purpose of personnel with not action to be taken.

The next meeting of the West Unity Village Council will be Thursday, July 9 at 7:30 PM in council chambers.
