PORT HURON, Mich. (AP) — The driver of an auto fleeing police that crashed into an SUV, killing another woman, has been sentenced to 20-30 years in prison.
Theresa Marie Gafken learned her punishment Monday after a jury in Port Huron convicted her of second-degree murder last month.
St. Clair County Circuit Judge Michael West also ordered Gafken to pay more than $7,000 in restitution.
A Port Huron officer tried to stop Gafken’s car April 11 when she sped off and her car went through a red light, striking three vehicles, killing 48-year-old Kristine Donahue of Chesterfield Township, and injuring three others.
The Times Herald of Port Huron reports Gafken tearfully expressed remorse for the Donahue family’s loss and says she prays every day for them.
Gafken’s attorney had sought a sentence of 10 years.
